Development of a regional timber supply chain in Saarland
Conception and implementation of a preliminary study and accompanying networking of stakeholders
Background
In 2021 there was a significant price increase in the construction timber market. Wood was increasingly sold on American and Asian markets in Europe. It was observed that the price increases did not reach the forest owners, i.e. the wood producers. The high profit margins were achieved in the intermediate trade and in the few remaining sawmills.
It is therefore a regional obligation to develop regional value chains in order to achieve diversification and partial independence in the region. Supplying the construction sector with timber from the Greater Region contains growth potential that must be developed and made usable.
Project goal
The aim is to make the wood value chain more resilient and to anchor it regionally. The actors should be united, their concerns should be verbalized to the regional support and thus a further shift to other economic centers should be stopped. Saarland wants to strengthen the position of timber construction in the region.
Project organization
- WP 1: Networkling of Saarland market players Communication concept
- WP 2: Analysis of the existing structures Data acquisition
- WP 3: ZFuture wood requirements from the point of view of the building trade
- WP 3.1: New building in timber construction
- WP 3.2: Energetic refurbishment of existing buildings
- WP 3.3: Wood requirement for heat and process energy generation
- WP 4: Development of possible scenarios for setting up a value chain
- WP 5: Further development of the value chain with more regional identity and participation of the construction industry and crafts
Project content
The project involves important Saarland actors and their perspectives in four workshops as well as craftsmen and energy consultants in the preparation of the preliminary study right from the start. The networks of the AGV Bau Saar enable direct access to the craft companies.
In order to be able to develop targeted measures for cluster maturation, it is necessary to describe the initial situation and to develop the activities on the basis of secure data. The data collection and needs analysis are primarily based on the needs of the economy. The concrete questions of the construction trade and industry are compiled at the beginning of the project and developed in a joint process with the clients.
There are around 493,000 private households in Saarland, around 76% of which were built before the 1st Heat Insulation Ordinance. At 62,6%, Saarland has the highest private household ownership rate in Germany.
