The Research Grpup Transformative Mobility examines the social conditions, challenges and design for shaping a socio-ecological mobility transition. It responds to the hitherto strongly technology-oriented focus of mobility research up to this point by systematically bringing social, cultural and power-related dimensions into the focus.

Theoretically, the group combines approaches from social ecology, discourse and hegemony theory, intersectional inequality research and critical transformation research. Methodologically, it combines transdisciplinary living-lab research with qualitative and quantitative social science methods as well as spatial analyses. Living-labs serve as central platforms for researching and actively shaping concrete transformation processes in collaboration with stakeholders from academia, politics, public administration and civil society.

An interdisciplinary team, an established project portfolio and a close cooperation with academic and practice-oriented partners form a solid foundation for further development.

The aim of the research group is to actively shape the academic and societal debate on the mobility transition, to open up new funding opportunities and to position IZES as a key player in the field of transformative mobility research.
